Waiting…This Weekend on DNTO

mainimageBreak ups are hard enough…but when you add in the perfunctory STD tests, they become excruciating. This week’s DNTO show is all about waiting, and I talk about how waiting for those test results can turn an average, ordinary person in to an absolute raving lunatic…not that I am speaking from experience.

OK, I am speaking from experience.

It airs this Saturday on CBC Radio One 89.3 FM, 990 AM at 1 pm. (I will be on between 2 pm and 3 pm)

We are now in rehearsals for our new fringe play, She’s Not There. SNT is a dark comedy about a couple who find their happy(if not boring) existence threatened when they meet their neighbor, who happens to be a “perfect girl”.

Find out more about it at the Winnipeg Fringe site where you can also buy tickets. Stay tuned here and on the show page for updates and reviews.

A Feminist Wedding goes big time

Well…maybe not big time. But “bigger time” anyway.

My blog, A Feminist Wedding caught the eye of a reporter over at the Houston Chronicle, and it led her to include me in her article about feminist weddings!

It’s a very interesting article, that begins with the sentence “Alix Sobler is getting married.”

YIKES!

You can read the article, and my reaction to it, on my blog, feministwedding.blogspot.com.

A great reading and FRINGE SOON!

There was an amazing reading of The Golem on Sunday night, by a seriously phenomenal cast. Picture of the event will be posted shortly.

And in big news…The Fringe approaches! My new play She’s Not There is so on, and I’ve got venues and time details coming up really soon…stay posted.

REMINDER: A reading of The Golem

golem

This weekend there will be a reading of my play ‘The Golem” in New York. ‘The Golem” is a play about a group of actors living in the Warsaw Ghetto who get together to put on a play. Originally produced at Brown University in 2001, this play has really stuck with the original cast and crew, prompting its “resurrection”. If you are going to be in New York on May 31st, you should come check it out.

WHAT: A reading of “The Golem”

WHEN: May 31st, 2009 7pm

WHERE:  Shetler 1 (244 West 54th Street, 12th floor
between Broadway & 8th Avenue)

RSVP to the event on Facebook.

WHO: Ben Steinfeld: Sam

Emily Young: Malka

Megan Hart: Mitzi

Rebecca Hart: Anne

First impressions…This weekend on DNTO

mainimage

Meeting the in-laws for the first time. Who doesn’t want to make a good impression? Tune in to DNTO this week to hear the amazing true story about how my partner Jason met my family for the first time, and what kind of first impression he made on the whole mishpucha (that’s family in yiddish, by the way).

It airs this Saturday on CBC Radio One 89.3 FM, 990 AM at 1 pm.

Solo Performance Workshop at PTE

2416100250_aa478b3496

I am excited to be teaching a Solo Performance Workshop at PTE for thier spring semester. This is something I have wanted to get into for a long time, and I hope that this is just the first of many.  Because it is such a short class (only five weeks) it will be more about developing the skills that go into making a solo show, than developing actual shows. However, if you come with an idea in mind, this class will definitely help you jump start a new project. Here is the description of the class (and of me) that PTE sent out:

ALIX SOBLER teaching a great SOLO SHOW workshop for adult performers at PTE

This class will focus on learning and developing solo work, but because it is such a short class it is not about mounting a show. It is more about helping people find their voice, develop writing and performing skills and setting about creating larger works eventually.

April 21 – May 24, 2009 — Fun five-week classes to spice

up your spring!

The Solo Show

Course Code AS5

5 weeks $115.00 + $20.00 non-refundable registration fee

A great class for the performer who is developing a one-person show for a Fringe Festival or any other live performance venue.

Instructor Alix Sobler is an acclaimed Solo Performer and a skilled director and coach who will provide you with the inspiration, understanding and tools you need to create a successful Solo how.

Alix Sobler is a writer and performer who has been creating solo work for more than 10 years. She has written 5 solo shows, and toured four of them throughout the United States and Canada . Through humour and character work, her solo shows have addressed everything from STDs to the de-industrialization of North America . Her work can often be heard on CBC radio (Definitely Not The Opera, The Content Factory), including a one-hour special on The 204.  She is also a playwright and dramaturge and has worked with other solo performers like Trish Cooper , Jason Neufeld and Deb Filler. With a strong background in comedy and dramatic structure, Alix has taught many theatre and writing classes and looks forward to teaching the solo performance class at PTE. She studied solo performance at Brown University , where she earned a BA in performance and playwriting.

If you have ever considered doing solo performance, or are looking to develop a new show, this class might be just what you are looking for.
